Striped down windows computer

Due to its popularity, broad developer support, breadth of built-in capabilities, and unrivaled out-of-the-box support for peripheral devices, it is the platform of choice for hundreds-of-thousands of mission critical, industrial, and other special purpose applications such as kiosks, digital signage, and other systems.

Some organizations choose Windows 10 IoT formally known as Windows Embedded or Windows 10 LTSB long term servicing branch for their deployments because of stability and finite control over native operating system features. However, Windows 10 IoT and LTSB are overall more expensive and less accessible, offered only on a limited set of computing hardware, require special licensing, and in-depth knowledge of complex implementation and deployment procedures. A shortfall of choosing this option is dealing with the bloatware included with these systems that often absorbs valuable system resources and increases security risks.

However, these issues can be addressed by stripping down and optimizing the operating system. The remainder of this article is dedicated to the many options available to strip down and optimise Windows Home and Pro for special purpose use. In order to optimize Windows 10 Home or Pro for specific purpose functionality, the OS environment should be:.

To assist with these optimizations, Inteset has provided a detailed check-list and brief instructions on the various Windows 10 Home and Pro elements that can be adjusted or removed to improve the environment for special purpose use. It is recommended that a series of OS images be created periodically during the configuration process so that, in case of any misconfigurations, the OS can easily be reverted to the last good image.

In addition, when configurations are completed, a master image can be created for deployment on multiple systems with the same hardware. Note that the list below constitutes as recommendations and in its entirety, may not fit all Windows configuration scenarios.

Also note that many of the suggestions listed do not provide specific instructions as they go beyond the scope of this article. In this case, links to relevant detailed instructional sites are provided for your convenience. This section covers recommended changes to various Windows 10 settings that are more suitable for special purpose use.

This does not apply to Windows UMP type applications. This section discusses how to remove items from the Windows Start Menu in order to display only the desired applications.

This section covers the removal of unneeded Windows applications and features such as Internet Explorer 11 and many built-in Windows 10 packages.

This section lists several miscellaneous Windows core components to remove or disable such as Cortana, Edge Browser, and OneDrive as well as other unnecessary features. On the next screen on the installation wizard, nLite will ask you to point it to the location of your Windows installation disc. If you've got a disc in your drive, point it there. Next nLite will ask you to pick a folder on your hard drive to save the stripped install files to.

Once you've pointed nLite to all the right places, click Next to copy all the files from your disc onto your hard drive. Once nLite finishes copying the Windows installation files to the folder you selected on your hard drive which will take a few minutes , the fun begins. The next window you'll see is the nLite Presets window, which you can use to replicate a previous nLite session so you can re-create a slimmed-down disc without going through the work of manually selecting the components you want to remove.

For example, you could copy everything I've done by grabbing my Last Session. Then, instead of going through all the settings yourself, you could choose my presets file, click Next, accept everything on the Task Selection pane as-is, and click through all the windows until you've created the new installation disc. If you don't want to go with a preset, you can make all the changes you want to at the Task Selection window.

At this window, you green light everything you want to include or remove from the installation. Likewise, you can integrate any hotfixes like the revised Daylight Saving Time hotfix or drivers into your installation.

For our purposes, however, the important part comes in the Remove section. Whatever your preferences for the rest, be sure to green light the Remove Components section. When you're happy with your Task Selection choices, click Next. The nLite wizard will now walk you through each green-lighted feature.

For example, if you chose to integrate a service pack, you'll need to point nLite to the downloaded service pack. Assuming you chose to remove components, you'll eventually come to the Components step of the nLite wizard. In this step, you choose what components of the Windows installation you want to exclude. You can be brutal in this section, but keep in mind that disabling some components can cripple some Windows features.

To help you rip out as many components as possible while ensuring you don't break any important features, nLite has a Compatibility option that allows you to check important features that you want to keep intact. Since I'm going the merciless route while slimming my install disc with nLite, I'm selecting just a few compatibility options as seen in the screenshot. After choosing those options, I'm going through the Components list and checking off most components I'm not expecting to use—which is most of them—for removal.

This part can take some time, but the nLite wizard does a nice job of informing you of what each component does and what may be affected if you remove it.

You can remove most of the components without ever noticing, but keep an eye out when you're going through the list. To open the Windows Features dialog box, click Start, type programs and features , and press Enter. Windows 7 users can take a quicker alternative route: Click Start, type windows features , and select Turn Windows features on or off. Then it usually reboots the PC. Turn it off. Do you ever print documents over the Internet? Then uncheck Internet Printing Client.

It lets you share files across a network while editing them with a remote colleague. A lot of people were disappointed with Microsoft dropped Meeting Space from Windows 7.

Turn off Tablet PC extras, part 1. In the long-ago days before the iPad , a tablet PC was a laptop with a touchscreen that could rotate degrees and fold down over the keyboard. With those rather bulky and heavy tablets in mind, Windows offers some very good tools for touchscreen interfaces. However, if your computer lacks a touchscreen, you have no reason to leave them on. This is a two-step process that starts in the Windows Features dialog box.

In XP, select Start, choose Run, type services. The window that comes up can seem intimidating. It lists a great many services nearly on my PC that various programs need to help them do their job.

The problem is that some of the services that are running in the background could just as well be sleeping. Double-click a service and up comes its Properties dialog box. Select Automatic, and it loads when Windows boots.

Select Manual, and it loads when a program needs it.
